Established in the early 1980s, School of Continuing Education is a secondary college of Beijing Dance Academy. The School has developed for over 30 years first as a training center, then as the Department for Adult Education, before finally establishing itself as the School of Continuing Education.
Committed to artistic pursuit, talent training and universal education in dance, the School strives to provide sustainable continuing education with degree programs (correspondence) and non-degree programs (training) as two drivers. While ensuring pedagogical quality, the School seeks to steadily expand enrollments in the two programs. Under the guiding principle of “steady and balanced progress, artistic and pedagogical excellence, sound management and innovation”, the School continues to standardize management, innovate training programs to deliver higher quality of teaching, and build modern online education resources by developing digital courses.
Fully leveraging the rich resources of the Beijing Dance Academy, the School has put in place an entire system of different types of correspondence and training centers with Beijing at the center and covering a number of provinces and cities across China at different levels, with the goal of building reputation in Beijing and establishing presence across the nation and overseas. The joint development of degree programs (correspondence) and non-degree programs (training) is regarded as a sustainable and innovative model of dance education for adults.
The School has a highly qualified and innovative faculty with an increasing number of instructors with high credentials to provide excellent teaching. Placing high value on both professional competence and work ethics, the School has been in the lead in continuing education of dance in China. Instructors will first receive pre-post training before being sent to teach in other regions.
The pedagogical system is held up to strict standards. For many years, the School has explored the master-apprentice model, the learning-by-doing model and the learning-by-research model in teaching, producing large numbers of choreographers, educators, performers for the society while putting in place a fine platform for universal dance education.
The School’s non-degree continuing education (training) stands out in national dance continuing education with its distinct characteristics in curriculum, talent training and teaching materials. Various types of training programs are offered with different duration and at different levels. The degree programs (correspondence) are provided at two levels, namely, post-secondary associated degree program and bachelor’s degree program for associated degree holders.
The School operates its own system of teaching and administration. Regular bodies of the School include: the School Office, the Division of Teaching Affairs, the Division of Admissions and External Communication, and the Division of Finance. Under the guiding principle of “ensuring pedagogical excellence and putting students first”, the School has built and maintained strong social reputation with its highly qualified instructors and administrative staff, rigorous and standardized management and outstanding service.
Years of the School’s dedication to teaching has culminated in producing outstanding graduates now working in different positions across the country. Currently, the School is at a critical stage of all-around development. In line with the high importance the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China places on the development of online education and continuing education towards building a learning-based society to enhance the national caliber, the School will fully leverage its advantages and established image in moving forward as a world-class institution for continuing dance education with distinctive characteristics, balanced development and top teaching quality.
